If you were excited about the chance to teach ESL to students in China only to get rejected by VIPKid, you aren’t alone. While VIPKid only has a handful of requirements – they are strict about them. Let’s go over the VIPKid teaching requirements, simple application tips, and how/when you can reapply.

VIPKid Teaching Requirements

In order to work for VIPKid, you MUST have a bachelor’s degree; there’s no getting around this requirement. However, it does not have to be in education, and any field of study will be considered. VIPKid also wants you to have experience working with kids, though this requirement is not as strict. Teaching experience is ideal, but you can have other experiences with kids – anything counts. If you tutored, babysat, or student taught, it counts.

Finally, you must be a resident of the United States or Canada and be easy to understand (a thick accent may get you denied, unfortunately).

Application Tips

The application process is straightforward. If you meet the above guidelines, you will move through the first step. Just be honest, and make sure you meet the requirements we listed above. Moving onto the quiz/demo and mock class, you may run into a little more trouble. This is when it’s great to have a VIPKid referral code. The referrer is another VIPKid teacher who mentors you. It’s like having your own coach to get you through the quiz and mock class.

Are they nerve-wracking? Yes, absolutely, but with practice, you can get through it. It really helped me to have a mentor, so I highly suggest it. I felt a lot better going through the process since I knew most of the questions and scenarios they would throw at me. It’s a great confidence booster.

My VIPKid Application was Rejected. Can I Reapply?

Believe it or not, most people get rejected in the application phase for one silly reason: they do not count all of their work experience with children. The question states, ‘What kind of experience do you have with K-12 education in the US or Canada?’ It sounds like you must have teaching experience, but they mean ANY experience with children.

If you have 2+ years in any setting, put in the number of years of experience you have with children, and your application will go through. Remember, this can be tutoring, babysitting, camp counselor, youth group mentor, substitute teaching, daycare provider, and the list goes on.

If you were rejected, for this reason, go ahead and reapply, but you must use a different email address. If you have not already used a VIPKid referral code at this point, I suggest using one this time around. Your mentor can even help you through the application process to make sure you get approved this time.

Once you get through the application process, you have as many tries as necessary to get through the remaining steps. VIPKid recognizes the pressure the live mock classes put on potential teachers, so know that you have plenty of time to get approved and become a VIPKid teacher.
